What are dermal filler injections?

Also called cosmetic fillers, dermal filler injections are minimally invasive treatments used to correct wrinkles and lines that form as a result of aging and sun damage (”static” wrinkles), and to fill in depressions and restore volume in the cheeks, lips, and other areas. Some dermal fillers contain ingredients that help skin retain moisture so skin looks and feels firmer and more resilient for a longer period of time.

How do cosmetic fillers differ from BOTOX® injections?

Fillers are used to treat static wrinkles that form from aging, sun damage, and similar issues, while BOTOX® is used to treat dynamic wrinkles that form over time as a result of repeated facial movements like smiling or frowning. Many patients choose to have fillers and BOTOX® injections to treat both types of wrinkles and enjoy results similar to a “mini” facelift.

What happens during treatment?

First, the treatment areas are carefully evaluated to determine the best placement for the injections. Once the skin is cleansed, a topical anesthetic may be applied to numb the injections sites and decrease discomfort. The fillers are carefully injected in strategic locations to achieve the best results. The number of injections will depend on the issue that's being treated. After treatment is completed, there may be some mild redness, or minor swelling or bruising in the injection sites, but these issues will clear up soon after treatment. There is no recovery time following treatment, and patients can return to their normal routines immediately afterward.

How soon will I see results?

Initial results will be visible immediately after treatment, with final results appearing once any minor swelling resolves.

How long will results last?

That depends on the type of filler that's used, where it's used, and other factors.
